How We Teach

We want to prepare our students for a successful and happy life, build their confidence, and develop their talents.
How are we going to do that?

English classes

All subjects will be taught in English by our internationally trained and experienced staff. Our students will work in an international environment.

Tailored education

Every student is an individual with unique needs. We prefer fewer subjects divided into levels of increasing difficulty. We will also offer individual consultations, specialized subjects, and workshops.

Learning by doing

Project-based learning and Thematic learning will be prevalent in the APP curriculum. Anybody can read tons of textbooks without thinking. It is more important to understand and be able to work with different information and sources. With project-based learning students are able to connect the dots, share their work in a team and present it to others. Two weeks of each semester will concentrate on thematic learning. Students will apply their knowledge and personal experiences to deal with complex world topics.

Contact with reality

It is important that students are in touch with the real world. We will organize discussions with remarkable politicians, businessmen, scientists, and others. We will encourage our students to devise their own projects that we can support, such as organizing conferences, creating websites and starting businesses.

Study abroad

Thanks to our cooperation with boarding schools in the USA and Canada we can offer our students discounts at these schools.

American know-how

The American education system is considered one of the best in the world. That is the reason why we are able to afford a high quality education to all of our students.

Frequently Asked Questions

For what year can I apply to American Academy in Prague?

In the USA, 4-year high schools start at 9th grade and end at 12th. That means students can come to American Academy in Prague:

  • after 8th grade (British Year 9)
  • after 9th grade (British Year 10)
  • after 10th grade (British Year 11)
  • or transfer from the first year at Czech high school

How do we understand tailored education?

It is common that students at American boarding schools are not divided into classes by their age or grade/year, but by level of difficulty in their subjects.
They have fewer subjects than Czech schools but study more intensively in different difficulty levels.

Students can choose their subject level; if they do not feel strong in mathematics, they may choose a lower level. They will learn the essentials about financial literacy and how to use percents, simple proportion, geometry, etc.

If they demonstrate a higher skill in the humanities, they can choose a higher level in those subjects. The subject will get more demanding and complex, so students will spend more time on them. As a result, students learn in small classes with similar levels of skill. Thus, a teacher can adopt a more individualized approach to every student.

What is project-based learning?

This learning style helps students to learn by doing.
Project-based learning entails working in teams, solving problems, using appropriate information, communicating, working independently, and fostering creativity.
All of these are important skills to have for a successful life.

Project-based learning develops these skills every day. Students divide into teams that work on projects together. They prepare a summary of their work and present it to other students. A teacher is there to coordinate and help the students.

What is thematic learning?

Thematic learning is a complex learning method focused on modern world topics. At the end of the first and the second trimesters there will be two intensive weeks dedicated to each topic. There will be no subjects during this period.

For the first semester of 2017-2018 we have chosen the following topics: the refugee crisis and Mars colonization. Students will look into these topics from different perspectives. They will find answers to many complex questions, e.g., How is climate change connected to the refugee crisis? How do political decisions influence the refugee crisis? Is it possible to colonize Mars? How far is Mars? How much would it cost to travel there?

Students investigate historical, biological, physical, and entrepreneurial perspectives.

What is the focus of American Academy in Prague?

Our students and their achievements. It is up to them to choose what they really want to study. We are here to guide them and support them. We teach everything in English. Our goal is to prepare our students for a successful life in the 21st century.

We do this by helping them discover their passions and supporting them to reach their potential.
Thanks to American accreditation we can add subjects like Marketing, Management, Business, Politics, and International Affairs.

What is the minimum required level of English?

Students’ English level should be at least B1 to understand all subjects in the lower level. But don’t worry; students learning only in English improve quickly, and soon they are able to understand complex topics.
