Today’s world is constantly changing. Experts say that 47% of today’s jobs will disappear in the next 25 years. That is why we need to rethink the way we educate our kids. At the American Academy, we start where everybody else ends. Our students get support to set their goals so they can excel and prepare for the future.

Knowledge thirsty

We help our students to discover and develop their passions. We teach them responsibility by giving them freedom to choose what they want to study. Students choose 5 of the classes that they are most interested in every trimester. This way, they can explore different areas and discover what they are passionate about.

Theory vs. Real Life

There is lot of knowledge in books, but even more out there in the real world. To get our students ready for their future careers, they need to experience as much as possible. That is why they work on projects where they learn to manage a business, plan a marketing campaign, debate human rights or run a school magazine. Thanks to this, students will be able to apply their knowledge, cooperate with others and present their ideas better, sooner than their peers from other schools.

21st century education

American Academies are up to date with today’s world. Our teachers are handpicked from the best educators around the world. Classes are 70 minutes long and all in English. There is also a thematic project each trimester. The first one was a business project - Haunted House. The following topics are going to be the Refugee Crisis and Colonization of Mars. The principle of thematic learning is that we stop "standard" classes for 1-2 weeks. Each of the classes deals with the given topic from its perspective.

The Haunted House project was the first of 3 thematic projects at American Academy in Prague this academic year. Students were tasked with organizing a Halloween event that will have high attendance and profitability. In just a month, our students prepared a scary Haunted House which attracted over 400 visitors. The project had a spectacular return on investment as well – making it both a successful project and business.

Students were divided into three teams - Finance, Marketing, Design. All classes were connected with this project.

Let us show you an example of the Mathematics class. Integrated Mathematics students calculated the area and capacity of a space to find out how much steam had to be let in to a room to get the desired effect. Other students were in charge of budgeting and accounting. They cooperated with the marketing and design teams and made sure they did not go over the budget.

English students came up with the whole background story of the Haunted House. They also cooperated with the marketing team, creating slogans and ad texts as well as an ESL lesson for elementary visitors to the haunted house. Students from Publishing cooperated with Business class students on the production of leaflets while the Design team came up with decoration of the whole Haunted House which was located on the school campus, covering hundreds of square meters.

Thanks to this project, students got to manage their teams and the event as a whole. They also learned many practical skills in the areas they study. We can't wait for future projects to come!

Frequently Asked Questions

How do we understand tailored education?

Studenti na internátních školách v Severní Americe nejsou rozděleni do tříd podle věku, ale podle úrovní předmětů. Během týdne se učí méně předmětů než čeští studenti, výuka je však o to intenzivnější a rozdělená do několika úrovní obtížnosti.

Každý student si tak může sám volit náročnost předmětů. Pokud tedy například není příliš silný v matematice a ví, že se jí nikdy nebude v životě aktivně věnovat, může si zvolit její nižší úroveň. Bude se tak zabývat spíše základní finanční gramotností a nezbytnými nástroji jako jsou procenta, trojčlenka, geometrie apod. Pokud naopak má velký zájem o některý z humanitních oborů, může si posílit humanitní předměty a studovat je na vysoké úrovni. Látka tak bude náročnější a student na ni vynaloží více času a energie.

Uvedený způsob výuky má za následek malé třídy, ve kterých jsou znalosti dětí na srovnatelné úrovni. Díky tomu se studentům dokáže učitel lépe a efektivněji věnovat.

What is project-based learning?

Práce v týmu, řešení problémů, vyhledání informací, komunikace, samostatnost, kreativita, schopnost prezentace. To jsou všechno vlastnosti, které jsou v dnešní době naprosto klíčové pro uplatnění v životě.

Skrze projektovou výuku je možné tyto vlastnosti rozvíjet dennodenně při vyučování. Studenti budou v hodinách rozděleni do týmů, kde si rozdají úlohy a budou pracovat na projektech v rámci daného předmětu. Následně ze společné práce připraví výstup a odprezentují jej spolužákům. Učitel celý proces koordinuje a dohlíží na studenty.

Tento způsob výuky umožňuje studentům propojit své dovednosti a chápat problémy v širších souvislostech. Díky řešení problémů každodenního života jsou studenti mnohem lépe vybaveni pro úspěch v reálném světě.

What is thematic learning?

Jedná se o komplexní způsob výuky zaměřený na aktuální témata moderního světa. Během ní se na konci prvního a druhého trimestru na dva týdny zruší klasické předměty a studenti se budou intenzivně věnovat studiu předem stanovených aktuálních témat. Jedno téma bude humanitní a druhé technicky orientované.

Pro první pololetí 2017/2018 budou těmito tématy, uprchlická krize a kolonizace Marsu. Studenti se jednotlivým tématům věnují z různých úhlů pohledu, ať už jde o historický, fyzikální, klimatický či podnikatelský.

Odpovídají si tak na celou řadu komplexních otázek. Jak souvisí změny klimatu s migrační krizí? Jak ovlivňuje politické rozhodnutí, případně historický vývoj migrační krizí? Je teoreticky možné kolonizovat Mars? Pokud ano, jak se liší podnebí na Marsu od podnebí na Zemi? Jak daleko je Mars? Kolik taková cesta bude stát?

What is the focus of American Academy in Prague?

Our students and their achievements. It is up to them to choose what they really want to study. We are here to guide them and support them. We teach everything in English. Our goal is to prepare our students for a successful life in the 21st century.
We do this by helping them discover their passions and supporting them to reach their potential. Thanks to American accreditation we can add subjects like Marketing, Management, Business, Politics, and International Affairs.

How does the admission process work?

We want to know as much as possible about our students before they start studying. Therefore, we have an essay prepared for the applicants, personal interview with a representative of the selection committee and a test in English.

What is the minimum required level of English?

Students’ English level should be at least B1 to understand all subjects in the lower level. But don’t worry; students learning only in English improve quickly, and soon they are able to understand complex topics.
